Birds:

Abbotsbury Swannery: 10 minutes away.

The Lodmoor Nature Reserve: Good at all times of year with breeding, passage and wintering birds.

Brownsea Island: The RSPB and Brownsea Island Ferries operate the Poole Bird Boat, 2 hr trip. Ring for dates and details.
Tel: 01929 462383.

Wildlife and Nature:

Look at www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/dorset/reserves for all the information you need on the various sites in Dorset.

Kingcombe Meadows: This caused much national interest when it came on the open market in the late 1980’s because it had been untouched by all modern farming methods. With its unimproved grassland, ancient hedgerows, green lanes, ponds and streams it remains rich in its variety of grasses, herbs, lichens, butterflies and fungi.

Powerstock Common: This near to Kingcombe Meadows is also well worth a walk.

Badgers: If you would like to observe badgers try www.badgerwatchdorset.co.uk which is not far away.

Sculpture by the Lakes: (pictures above)

We are so lucky to have this totally unique and utterly stunning place so close to us. Simon and Monique Gudgeon have created a stunning tranquil place to enjoy water, art, light and planting. Simon's inspiring sculptures and Monique's creative planting around 40 acres of lakes just east of Dorchester has to be experienced first hand.  Booking is required as they ensure it is never over crowded so every visitor gets to enjoy it in relative solitude.  One of our favourite local venues.  www.sculpturebythelakes.co.uk  Take a bottle and a picnic and really make the most of it!

Gardens:

Athelhampton House opens its gardens to the public, ancient yew topiary, river walk and water gardens with an on-site cafe.  www.athelhampton.co.uk

Forde Abbey: Stunning ancient abbey with wonderful gardens open throughout the year. Constantly evolving, a must for garden lovers.  www.fordeabbey.co.uk

Abbotsbury Tropical Gardens: Only 15 minutes from us by the coast these lovely tropical gardens with colonial tea house and shop are part of the local garden tour.  www.abbotsbury-tourism.co.uk  Floodlit for 2 weeks over October half term.

Dorset NGS:  Both properties should have the NGS book for the year as there are many wonderful private gardens open locally for various charities throughout the seasons.  www.ngs.org.uk

Knoll Gardens: Not too far away at Wimborne, these multi gold award Chelsea exhibitors are nationally acclaimed for their fabulous grasses.  Wonderful gardens showing a massive range of plants.  www.knollgardens.co.uk
